CHAPTER ELEVEN

THEN
Pushing the heavy glass door open, my eyes scan the hair salon, searching for Zara. When I spot her washing a clientâs hair by the row of basins, I wave.
Smiling, she raises a hand, gesturing for me to wait a minute. Instead of loitering in the waiting area, I duck back outside and go to the coffee shop next door and order us each a large caramel latte. Hers iced, of course.
It wasnât surprising that we both like the same drink, because as it turns out, Zara and I have a lot more in common than Jesse and I do.
Jesse is a man of precision and purpose. We often joke that he is always the man with a plan. Zara and I are the complete opposite. Weâre fueled by feelings, both good and bad. We live in that single moment, and youâd have no idea what to expect with either of us because it could all change in a hot minute.
Which makes my visit to her workplace even more out of character. But being with Jesse is unlike anything I have ever done. Itâs stable. Itâs constant.
And I find myself wanting to make plans.
âHey.â Zaraâs voice comes up behind me just as my drink order is placed on the counter in front of us.
Carefully grabbing the two drinks, I turn to hand one to her and kiss her on the cheek. âHow are you?â
âGood,â she answers suspiciously. âAnd you?â
âYou want to know why Iâm here, donât you?â
âWell, it canât be an emergency with Jesse,â she says. âYou look too calm for that.â
âI finished work early.â I point to my head. âAnd I need a haircut.â
Zara and I both work downtown. Her in a funky, hipster hair salon, and Iâm two months into my new job as a bank teller for a popular financial chain.
She reaches for my hair and runs her fingers through my curls that have just started to grow back after she took the hair clippers to them. âYou donât need a haircut, unless youâre planning on letting me shave it again.â
âI think Jesse will kill us both,â I tell her. âBut humor me anyway.â
She doesnât balk at my request, and I appreciate it more than she knows. If it wasnât for the fact that I know she is the senior stylist who has free rein, I wouldnât bother her at work. Itâs been two months since I first met Zara, and the ease in which we both became a staple in one anotherâs lives shouldâve shocked me, but just like with Jesse, Iâm smitten with her too.
âI just have to put some hair colour on my client,â she informs me. âBut come inside, take a seat, and I can fit you in while weâre waiting for theirs to set.â
I grab her forearm before she leaves. âThank you.â
Nodding, she walks back inside and I follow. Zara points to an empty station with the usual mounted mirror and cabinet setup. âHave a seat here.â
I place my drink, wallet, and cell phone down in front of me and take my seat.
